Don’t Be Stagnant

Image I  just got off the phone with one of my mentors and he gave me some great advice as always.  He told me that he is turning 40 soon and so he recently sat down, pulled out a 3×5 notecard, and wrote down his Top 5 Values for his next decade.  He said (and I’m paraphrasing), “I have discovered that I often times achieve my dream or goal but not in the way that I had planned or ever envisioned.  And so for my next decade I do not want to think of goals as much as values.  I know I want to spend quality time with my kids, my wife, and I want to find fulfillment in my work while providing a great income for my family.  I am going to focus on values, not specific goals in my forties.”  This spoke to me in a HUGE way.  In my mid-twenties however, I do not feel prepared to think about my next decade!  So for me, I am going to sit down and come up with my Top 5 Values for my next half-decade.  I am calling this my 5-FOR-5!  What is your 5-FOR-5?  What are your Top 5 Values for your next 5 years?  I love the quote (and I heard it from Lou Holtz when I had the great opportunity of meeting him but others may have said it as well), “If you’re not growing, you’re dying.”  So get busy growing!  Write out your 5-FOR-5 today!  And if you really want to experience true growth and development, post your 5-FOR-5 here, on my FB page, Tweet it to me, Instagram it, text it to me…whatever way works for you!  Get your goals out there and make them public if you want to make them possible.

“The dream is like a river, ever changing as it flows and the dreamer’s just a vessel that must follow where it goes. We must learn from what’s behind us, never knowing what’s in store keeps each day a constant battle just to stay between the shore”
